Gnome 3.2 released

Gnome 3.2 has been released. In the release notes we can read that we will have online accounts integration, so we'll be able to manage our online docs, contacts, and calendar events in our Linux Desktop.

I think the new look and feel is a big step in the renew of the Desktop aspect.

They changed the applications bar, and it's possible that the new way of execute applications and manage windows is faster.

I expect to install this new version as soon as possible. :-)

Delicious alternatives

During last week I could read a lot of news about the future close of Delicious as a Yahoo service. There are a lot of initiatives trying that Yahoo change the license of Delicious and adopt some open source license.

In the meanwhile I'm a bit worried about what to do with my bookmarks. I'm looking for Delicious alternatives so I found a blog where the author tried 28 Delicious alternatives and wrote the links:

Reboot Linux box after a kernel panic

If you want the server to get rebooted automatically after kernel hit by a pain error message, try adding panic=N to /etc/sysctl.conf file.

It specify kernel behavior on panic. By default, the kernel will not reboot after a panic, but this option will cause a kernel reboot after N seconds. For example following boot parameter will force to reboot Linux after 10 seconds.

Problems with hotmail

We have detected several problems with mails sended to hotmail for some months. We could see sometimes the filter moving the email to the junk folder, and sometimes the mail never arrives.

Finaly we configured a new server with a new domain. We are testing because we have to mail about 25000 users. We tested it with one hotmail account, one yahoo account, and one gmail account.

The logs showed normal messages.

Then I requested the help of Google, my friend, and he shows me vaulables links from people with the same problems.

Then I revised my spf politics in DNS and sent a mail to senderid@microsoft.com with the domains we need.

I received this mail back:

I followed the instructions, and at the moment i'm waiting. I don't understand why people keep on using hotmail if there are much better alternatives.

Personally I don't like bluecurve, but perhaps this is a good release.

Change the hostname without rebooting Red Hat

It's simple, we need only touch two files.

First we need to edit the file in /etc/sysconfig/network. There we write the hostname we want.

Next we need to change the name in the file /etc/hosts.

Next step is restart the network to see if the changes are visible, but if we can't restart the network, we can change the hostname with the command with the same name hostname, and it's vaild until the next boot.

We can know what version of glibc we have only executing this command:

We can execute it with an user without privileges.

How to migrate users from UNB forums to phpbb forums

If you have a UNB forum system with a lot of users and you want change the system to phpbb, you'll find that the password won't work due to the kmd5 system in UNB.

I found this problem with our forums, and I was working on it, and finally I think that it works, but I need test, test, test...

Well, these are the steps I took to get it.

1.- I changed the size of the column password in the table phpbb_users by running the following SQL statement:

 ALTER TABLE phpbb_users MODIFY user_password varchar(32);

2.- I changed to phpbb root directory and opened the file login.php. There I include the function unbCheckUserPassword from the file session.lib.php from UNB forums. I called the function checkUserPassword in login.php.

3.- At the line 124 I changed the condition. Prior the change the condition was:

if( (md5($password) == $row['user_password'] && $row['user_active'])

Now the condition is (I put it in one line):

if( (md5($password) == $row['user_password'] && $row['user_active']) || (checkUserPassword(md5($password),$row['user_password ']) && $row['user_active']))

4.- I change to the directory includes, there I opened usercp_register.php. We included again the function userCheckPassword. Approximately at the line 395 we have to change the condition. The old condition was:

if ( $row['user_password'] == md5($password) ]

Now the condition is:

if ( ( checkUserPassword(md5($cur_password),$row['user_password'])!=1) xor ($row['user_password'] == md5($cur_password)))

It's a bit strange, but we need to use XOR because if the both condition are true it's totally false for us. I tried it and apparently works.
